COLE HARDIN · BOOK 2
The Machine's Word
FOUR MINUTES. ONE MACHINE. A WAR NOBODY STARTED.
At sunset in Monaco, a drone swarm storms the heliport, lays down a smokescreen, blinds the guards of an armored truck and carries a case of diamonds to a waiting unmanned submersible. Then it's gone.
Every drone moved in perfect unison but one. Cole Hardin, a sidelined American intelligence officer, heard it; someone was flying it by hand. And Hardin's holding the line that leads to the pilot.
Washington and Paris blame Russia. An AI defense system called Mantle has learned the swarm's signature. Mantle is scheduled to guard the President on the Riviera, a warship ready to act on its word.
Hardin's trail leads to Catalonia and a suspicion: this was never about diamonds. When the swarm returns, a navy commander will have four minutes to decide whether to fire on the enemy Mantle names. Hardin may be the only one who knows it's wrong.
